Key Stage 4 Overview

KS4 Curriculum
Subject Details

Design and Technology

Students follow the EDUQAS specification for Design and Technology. This 2 year course is assessed through a major 50% non- exam assessment(undertaken during year 11) and a 50% written paper (taken at the end of the course). The controlled assessment involves the pupils undertaking a design and make project, the title of which pupils must select from a list provided by the exam board.

During Year 10 of the course students design and make a variety of products, working with the following materials:

  • Timber/wood,
  • Plastic,
  • Metal, and
  • Electronics.

This introduces pupils to the iterative design process in readiness for their major controlled assessment. Their knowledge of these materials and their manipulation also forms the basis of the questions in the final written examination paper. The course is a predominately practical specification, with all of the knowledge base being closely linked to the activities in the school workshop.
