Key Stage 3

Science in Year 7, 8 & 9

Key Stage 3 Overview

Year 7 and 8 students follow a two year KS3 scheme of work. Students are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics in termly units that cover the range of the new National Curriculum framework introduced in 2014.

Each KS3 lesson involves the use of differentiated objectives, where students are then able to apply what they have learnt in lessons to a weekly homework task. Homework is tailored for the ability of each group.

Pupils are regularly provided with the opportunity to develop their practical skills through a range of investigative activities delivered in relevant topics.

In order to facilitate learning, we expect students to bring a full set of equipment (pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, colouring pencils) to each lesson. It is also recommended that they buy a KS3 revision guide/workbook to enable them to revise for their termly assessments.

Students will be assessed in end of term and year tests, with their scientific ability assessed throughout science investigations. The KS3 Schemes of work for Years 7&8 are listed below:

In Year 9 students study a range of topics across the three science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We provide a broad and balanced science curriculum at GCSE level, with all students working towards a minimum of two GCSEs. The most able of our students have the opportunity to obtain three GCSEs providing an excellent foundation for further study at ‘A level’ in the Sixth Form and beyond.

GCSE courses will continue throughout Years 10 and 11 with all examinations being taken in May/June of 2018.
