Art Key Stage 5

Art in the Sixth Form

Key Stage 5 Overview

Here at Altrincham College, we provide our learners with the opportunity to study the Extended Diploma in Art and Design.

A BTEC in Art and Design is learning in a vocational context. It helps to build your confidence, competence and motivation. It also allows you the freedom to display your artistic talents, whilst developing your practical skills and the knowledge which you need to progress as artists or designers in fields such as photography, fashion and textiles.

Our fantastic sixth form allows our students to learn in dedicated and professional art and fashion rooms, which we are confident will provide students with the best outcomes at the end of their studies, with both rooms being spacious, well -resourced and equipped for work at this level.

As students are assessed through ongoing assessment, with no end-of-year exams, this means that students can be totally focused throughout the course.

An increasing number of the country’s artistically talented young learners see the BTEC as a step on the way to achieving their ambitions. BTEC courses are work related qualifications suitable for a wide range of students, built to accommodate the needs of employers and allow progression to university. They provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a key theoretical background. BTEC's are recognised by schools, colleges, universities, employers and professional bodies across the United Kingdom and in over 100 countries worldwide.

We presently offer the Subsidiary Diploma in Art and design the equivalent to 1 A’Level which is structures around 6 units 4 core and 2 optional. The present year 12 are the last cohort of this course.

The new BTEC Level 3  National Extended Certificate in Art and Design for teaching from September 2016 is structured around 4 units assignments which will allow students to develop a wide variety of skills.  There are 3 mandatory units which are externally set and assessed over the 2 years as well as 1 optional unit.

Students at the AC Sixth Form have the opportunity to study Art and Design at National Diploma Level.

The courses on offer allow students who are self‐motivated, independent, hard‐working, committed, and genuinely interested in the world of Art and Design. This is an opportunity to produce and develop an exciting and personalised portfolio consisting of Art, print making, sculpture, textiles and many more processes and techniques in a exciting working environment.

After completing the course, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to progress to university, where they can study a higher education foundation degree, higher national diploma or other professional development programme.
