Child Development in the Sixth Form

Key Stage 5 Overview

Suitable applicants must be self‐motivated, hard‐working, committed, have excellent attendance and a genuine interest in all aspects of working with children. Learners can use this qualification to progress to Higher Education to study for a degree, or directly into the work place.

This qualification is also suitable for those wishing to enter employment in the fields of Early Years, e.g. Day Nursery or Children’s Centre Worker; Social Care, e.g. Residential Childcare Worker, Or Education, e.g. Learning Mentor or Educational Welfare Officer.

About the qualifications

It is expected that all students will progress through the Award and Certificate to complete

the Diploma in order to be able to practice as an early years practitioner or continue on to further education.

  • Award You must achieve Units 1 and 2;
  • Certificate You must achieve Units 1 - 8; plus the Extended Assessment Task
  • Diploma You must achieve Units 1 - 15, plus the Extended Assessment Task and the Extended Practice Study
Other forms of Assessment

External assessment: Extended Assessment Task

The Early Years Educator develops children’s school readiness through understanding of the current early year’s framework.  The external assessment is prepared by CACHE and is based on the topics covered in year 12 (Units1-7)

The Extended Assessment will be graded D to A* and will be 5000 words

To achieve the Extended Assessment learners must achieve the minimum of a D grade.

External assessment: Extended Practice Study

The Early Years Educator promotes and supports children’s play, learning, development and well-being.  The external assessment is prepared by CACHE and is based on the topics covered in yr13 (Units 9-14)

The Effective Practice study will be graded D to A* and will be 5000 words.
