Science in Year 10 & 11

Key Stage 4 Overview

‚ÄčIn Years 10 and 11 students study a range of topics across the three science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We provide a broad and balanced science curriculum at GCSE level, with all students working towards a minimum of two GCSEs. The most able of our students have the opportunity to obtain three GCSEs providing an excellent foundation for further study at ‘A level’ in the Sixth Form and beyond.

Year 10 X1 and 11 X1 GCSE Sciences Options

Students in teaching groups 10X1 and 11X1 follow courses leading to three GCSE qualifications.

In 11X1 pupils have completed the Edexcel Core Science GCSE in Year 10. They will also have completed some units of the Edexcel Additional Science GCSE and will continue with the remaining units and the Edexcel Further Additional Science GCSE in Year 11.

In 10X1 pupils will continue to complete units of the linear Edexcel Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs begun in Year 9. These courses will continue throughout Years 10 and 11 with all examinations being taken in May/June of 2018.

Students will be assessed throughout the year using tiered assessments in booklets for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in addition to tiered termly tests and GCSE examinations in Term 3.


Year 10 GCSE Science groups (10X2-10Y3)

Students will follow the Edexcel Combined Science Double Award GCSE course. Six tiered examination papers will be taken in May/June of 2018. Both Foundation Tier and Higher Tier papers enable pupils to gain a C grade. The topics studied in each term are listed below.

Students will be assessed throughout the year in tiered assessments in booklets for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in addition to tiered topic tests and practice GCSE examinations in Term 3.


Year 11 GCSE Additional Science groups (11X2-11X5)

Students will follow the Edexcel Additional Science GCSE course. Three tiered examination papers will be taken in May/June of 2015 and a Controlled Assessment will also be completed. Both Foundation Tier and Higher Tier papers enable students to gain a C grade. All four components are worth 25% of the total marks for the qualification.
