Key Stage 3 Overview
Year 7 Curriculum – The Eatwell Guide
Students look at a wide range of topics, including:
Students undertake a range of practical lessons from quesadillas to eton mess, focusing on a different section of the Eat well Guide each time, building up to a final assessed practical where they choose their own dish suitable for a given person or event.
Year 8 Curriculum – Brilliant Bread
Students focus on the starchy carbohydrate food group, look at cereal crops and then how wheat is milled into flour.
The focus then becomes bread, with a delicious dish made each lesson accompanied by a bread based product. From chicken tikka and flatbread to pasta salad and garlic focaccia – there’s a vast range of lessons to really develop the pupils practical skills and develop their understanding of the 8 tips for healthy eating.
Year 9 Curriculum – The World On Your Plate
Students go on a cultural journey, looking at a different cuisine each lesson. From Chinese Stir Fry to Mexican chilli-con-carne and rice, the students develop their practical skills as well as learn about topical food issues such as seasonality, food miles, carbon footprint, and genetic engineering.
They then consider people’s differing nutritional needs, choose their own target group, and apply their knowledge to plan and make a dish that is nutritionally suitable for that person.
