Altrincham College of Arts - To Know To Care To Live

Extra Curricular

'The school is alive with activity from early morning until late at night' - (Ofsted 2008)

Catering for all Interests

There are a huge range of clubs, activities and study support lessons that take place, both at lunchtime and after school, throughout the year. Sporting, creative and academic interests are fully catered for through general interest clubs, inter-school and inter-form fixtures, revision groups and opportunities to study for additional extra-curricular qualifications.

Supporting Charities

Each year the school raises money for a number of identified charities. In 2007/08 a number of year group events enabled us to donate £1000 to Comic Relief, £700 to an Asthma charity, £1200 to Sports Relief and £350 to a Young Carers charity. We have raised funds of £1900 to support our linked twin school, the De Futura Academic in Cape Town, South Africa. We also regularly support Francis House and St Ann's Hospice.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Dance are part of the curriculum and feature strongly in the extra curricular opportunities offered. Children can join Arts and Theatre Clubs, the Choir, Steel Band, Percussion Band, Orchestra, Drama Club and Dance Club.

Each year there are a variety of drama and musical performances to which parents and pupils are invited. As well as the annual Christmas concert, a major production is staged each year. Recent shows have included The Wizard of Oz, Godspell, Grease, Oliver, Bugsy Malone, Annie and Our Day Out, all staged to great acclaim.

Music lessons are also available on an individual basis for:- Brass, Percussion, Steel Drums, Violin /Viola, Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone), Guitar and Piano. At present instrument tuition lessons are available at no cost to parents. We believe we are the only local secondary school to be able to offer free places for music tuition, through to graded examinations.

There are numerous opportunities to join arts clubs or study for additional arts based qualifications, e.g. Photography.

Sport

Physical Education and Sport enjoy a very strong tradition in the school. Our first class Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Fitness Suite and Dance/Drama Studio provide excellent facilities for pupils to develop their talents. Altrincham College competes regularly with other local schools in Football, Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Badminton, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket and Athletics. Many teams are extremely successful and a number of students have gone on to compete at District, County and even International level.

Sport

Many pupils in years 10 and 11 engage in the Junior Sports Leaders Award, in order to develop their own personal leadership qualities.

Health and Fitness

Our 'state of the art' fitness suite is a superb resource widely used by pupils to promote the values of health and exercise.

HOMEWORK AND HOMEWORK CLUB

Homework is viewed as integral to successful learning and all pupils are required to fulfil all their homework obligations in order to consolidate and extend learning. All pupils receive a homework planner to record homework tasks. This acts as a regular source of dialogue between school and parents.

Each Tuesday and Thursday evening between 3.20 p.m. and 4 .45 p.m., pupils are invited to attend study support sessions and homework club. Members of staff run these sessions to offer support, to help with homework and all aspects of class work.

For Years 10 and 11, members of staff run extra GCSE/BTEC support classes after school.

Late school buses run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4.45 pm to provide safe journeys home for all pupils staying on for homework club or for extra-curricular activities.
